What is the main difference between PLANNING and DRIVING VIEWS?

The two PLANNING VIEWS for the Route Map and Location Map assist the highway traveler in planning a road trip or in visiting a location of interest and identifying desirable rest stops. PLANNING VIEWS include the Long-Press feature, which allows the user to search and select suitable rest stops all along an extended road trip to be taken or near a distant location to be visited.

I’m planning a long road trip. How can I locate and select rest stops beyond 500 miles from my location?

The Long-Press feature available in a PLANNING VIEW is designed expressly for this purpose. Tap and hold a point in the area you are interested in, and all the rest stops in proximity (the size of the area is based on the search proximity scale last selected). If you are also highlighting a rest stop service category, that too will automatically be displayed in the Long-Press Feature. If creating a road trip, you can use the Long-Press feature to examine and select rest stops all along the planned route. These selected rest stops (displayed in red), will be displayed along the route in DRIVING VIEW.

How does the Long-Press feature work?

In a PLANNING VIEW, activating the Long-Press allows you to locate and select rest stops thousands of miles away as part of planning a lengthy road trip, or just to examine rest stop locations near a place or destination of interest. Neither driving distance nor navigation is available when the user has activated the Long-Press. This feature aids the user in selecting preferred rest stops prior to an actual road trip to minimize stress and maximize knowledge of the road ahead. When in DRIVING VIEW, the driving distance and navigation to these rest stops will be available in the rest stop info popup. Here’s how it works: when you press and hold your tap on a map location for a few seconds, rest stops around that location will be displayed. If your rest stop search proximity scale is set to 500 miles, you will see all facilities within 500 miles of the specified location, if the scale is set at 50 miles, you will see only those within 50 miles, etc. If creating a road trip with the Route Map/PLANNING VIEW, use the Long-Press feature to scroll and pan along the route and select preferred rest stops as needed.

Please explain the rest stop selection process.

Accepted Answer

Tapping any rest stop symbol on the map activates the Rest Stop Info popup, which provides information about that facility (name, road, state, location, services, reviews, etc.). Importantly, if the user taps “Select” in the popup, the rest stop symbol is changed from green to red, or yellow to red. Importantly, by being selected, a rest stop is saved and displayed in red. Then when in DRIVING VIEW all red rest stops can be tracked and navigated.

How can I monitor my progress along my trip?

As you drive the route, you can observe trip progress by following the GPS Location symbol on the DRIVING VIEW map. Tapping the black GPS Center/refresh symbol, will reposition the GPS symbol (and the user’s current location) at the center of the map. If tracking a selected rest stop, tapping the black GPS Center/refresh symbol then tapping the info popup will provide current driving distance to that facility. If there are unfamiliar or complex interchanges where close-in directions could assist, tap the white navigation symbol on the map (upper right). This activates local map and audible directions for the road trip. Closing the navigation screen automatically returns the user to the DRIVING VIEW.

What are rest stop alerts?

Rest stop alerts are operational descriptors about a particular rest stop facility. For example, facility name, entrance info, road number, etc.

Please define rest stop “tracking”

Rest stop tracking is the monitoring of current driving distance to selected rest stops in the info popups while in DRIVING VIEW.
